Description:
Large grosbeak with large head, massive bill and medium-length, notched tail. Male has black plumage with nape, upperparts and underparts are generally a purer, paler lemon-yellow. Female mantle and breast are pale grey and concolorous with head, and belly, flanks and rump are pale peachy-orange.
Distribution:
Possible resident in the south-western parts of Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan. Inhabits pine, silver fir and deodar forest, also oak woods and scrub at forest or woodland edge. In summer up to 3500m, descending to 1500m in winter.
Behavior:
Forages on the ground in bushes and low trees, and in canopy of tall trees, where usually concealed in foliage; in non-breeding season often digs into exposed areas of ground beneath trees and bushes. Diet includes seeds, buds, shoots and berries of pine, fir, also rose hips. Occasionally takes insects, including adult and larval moths and cicadas.
